Freezing Fluffy Knits
E
ver fallen in love with a soft fluffy sweater, or a warm chunky scarf - until it shedded all over you? Mohair tends to do this a lot (I usually avoid mohair as alpaca has a similar feel but is softer and usually sheds less in my experience), but depending on the weave and quality, other fibres like cashmere can also leave you with a ton of fluff.
I I think most of us had this happen at least once , so here’s one simple trick to minimize shedding that I swear by: Freeze it.
Put the item into a plastic bag and place it in the freezer for 24-48 hours. That’s it. Don’t ask me about the science behind it, just try it. It can’t hurt.
If after this it is still shedding, there’s probably no hope so then you might want to consider getting rid of it. I’ve had a deliciously fluffy sweater in my closet for years without wearing it because the fluff would get everywhere and even stick to my eyelashes, which was all very annoying so I never really wore it and in the end I gave up and donated it.
