Building Your Wardrobe

“I have nothing to wear!”

An early memory of my mother: I am just a kid, lounging on her bed as there are mountains of clothes forming all around me.
Lots of changing, walking to the mirror on one side of the bed, asking me how this looks, taking it off, growing the mountain and walking back to the wardrobe to dig something else out.
This was a ritual that happened regularly. As a little girl I didn’t understand how someone could have so many clothes they didn’t really like let alone love, so I chalked it up to her just not being any good with clothing.
Fast forward a decade or two and I found myself in a similar situation, only this time it was my own wardrobe and I didn’t feel like wearing anything that hung in there.

How does this happen?

This is such a female cliché. But clichés are so for a reason. I think most women have had this moment of standing in front of our open wardrobe with a blank look on our face and feeling like we have nothing to wear even though the closet is full and there is no way anyone questioning their sexuality could be hiding in there.

There are a few reasons why we might be in these situations: Unconscious/impulsive shopping habits, not knowing what looks great on you, sacrificing comfort for fashion, not thinking about your wardrobe as a whole and mismatching style and lifestyle are among some of the reasons you might find yourself here. It is good to reflect on this for a moment and see what your reasons might be, but you will most likely also find out your reasons by working through the solution.

Always have something to wear

The solution to not having anything to wear:

Building your wardrobe consciously.

In this series we’ll go into all the steps to do this properly, so that you’ll never stand dumbfounded in front of your wardrobe again.
Fair warning, it takes a good amount of time, patience, restraint and self-reflection so please do not start this process if you don’t have these right now, because you will just end up in the same situation you find yourself in right now, only some X-amount of dollars lighter. But I promise you, if you do this properly the results will be worthwhile.
