To Inhabit

”One of the basic human requirements is the need to dwell, and one of the central human acts is the act of inhabiting, of connecting ourselves, however temporarily, with a place on the planet which belongs to us and to which we belong.” (‘In Praise of Shadows’ by Junichiro Tanizaki)

A Haven

To me a home is a place that should make you feel at ease. A haven. A place to dock, repair, refuel and restock before heading back into the world. A place that makes you sigh with relief when you enter. A place to have your private moments of happiness with your loved ones.

your SurroundingS and your Mind

I think the synergistic effects of your surrounding and your body and mind are often underestimated. I have met many people whose cluttered and stuffed homes mirrored their scattered minds, and I know from myself that if my surroundings are messy, my thoughts will be less focused and more anxious and frazzled.

And so, why not create the surrounding that is most supportive to the mindset you want to cultivate? Do you want to create an oasis to wind down and refuel after working long hours at a stressful job? Or do you want to create a place with minimal distractions to invite your focus to move inward to your own thoughts and feelings? Or perhaps you want to create a place that inspires creativity and joy. There are so many feelings a home can evoke. It’s up to you to decide which ones you want to invite in.

reflect and build

So this series is an invitation for you to reflect on your current house or home situation. To pause and ask yourself what the function is of your home and whether it is in line with the mindset/habits that you want to cultivate. To start building a home consciously, for if done well, it will pay you back in multitudes.
